Movies are now a means of entertainment that is preferred by the general public. In Indonesia, Saraswati (2017) claims that the climate of the Indonesian film industry is getting better. In fact, a film is not only a means of entertainment, but also a persuasive media creator to convey ideas to the audience. In addition, film scenes can appear as models or standards in shaping a person's habits or self-concepts, especially for teenagers. This study aims to describe the role of the Dilan 1990 film in shaping youth self-concept in Yogyakarta.
This qualitative descriptive study uses Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to get primary data. There are 10 informants, consisting of 5 male teenagers and 5 female teenagers, high school students who have watched Dilan 1990 more than once. Analysis of research data using the model of Miles and Huberman (in Narendra, 2008): data reduction, data presentation, and (drawing) conclusions.
The results showed that the informants watched Dilan 1990 for the purpose of affective relations and social relations. However, from a gender aspect, talking about their reasons for watching films for the first time, male informants are driven by reasons that are very different from female informants. Male informants claim that they want to watch from getting invitations from friends Meanwhile, female informants admit
that they were interested in watching Dilan 1990 because they had read a book and were fascinated by the story.
After watching the film, all informants admitted that they compared the story of Dilan 1990 with their real lives. Female informants assume
Dilan as an ideal boyfriend, because he loves his mother, he can say flirty but funny word games, and he is one of the best students in the school – even though he is the leader of a motorcycle gang. As a result, they want to have a boyfriend who is like Dilan. This film has changed their perspective about bad boys who play the word. Meanwhile, male informants think Dilan is a cool, handsome young man,
loving his mother, is one of the top students, loyal and knows how to deal with his girlfriend, Milea. Male informants seem to want to be like Dilan.
After that, the informants compared their real life with the life of the main character of the film. The results show that the informants consider themselves
those who really are no better than the life of Dilan who became their ideal self. The informants also felt that their ideal selves were themselves. It was concluded that the film conveys persuasive messages that form the standards and values ‚Äč‚Äčthat are believed by consumers. This film is able to make the audience compare themselves with fictional characters. They believe that their real self (real-self) and their ought-self can change, based on criteria set by film characters.
