Acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) affect> 200 000 people per year with a mortality rate of 40%. Although platelets are involved in the development of ALI / ARDS, the exact role remains undefined. Trigger receptors expressed on myeloid cells (TREM) – such as transcript 1 (TLT-1) are found in platelets, bind fibrinogen, and mediate clot formation. We hypothesize that platelets use TLT-1 to manage the development of ALI / ARDS. Our findings indicate that TLT-1 uses fibrinogen to regulate the transition between inflammation and hemostasis and facilitates controlled leukocyte transmigration during the development of ARDS.
