We report oxygen isotope anomalies (Δ 17 O) and clump isotope compositions (Δ 47 ) CO. middle troposphere (~ 10 km above ground) for two flights CARIBIC (Civil Aircraft for Atmospheric Investigation Based on Container Instruments) in summer and winter: from Düsseldorf to Isla Margarita on August 11, 2001 and from Puerto Plata to Munich on February 21 , 2002. Middle-troposphere values Δ 17 are higher than near surface values of 0.051 ± 0.010 ‰ which indicates an increase in stratospheric influence. The values of 1945 47 were also higher at 0.160 ± 0.015 ‰ compared to those from the lower troposphere. The stratospheric influence is supported by observed correlations of values Δ 17 with mixing ratio N 2 O, O 3  and CO. carrying a stratosphere signature. The increase in anomalies in the free troposphere represents a balance between the flux of the tropospheric-tropospheric exchange and the rate of rearrangement of biogeochemical / hydrosphereal isotopes on the surface of the earth. Using a simple two-box model with a free troposphere Δ 17 O value, average CO exchange rate 2 between 327 and 772 PgC / year concluded, giving CO 2 turnover time of 1.4 to 2.8 years in the atmosphere. This estimate is based on a small set of free tropospheric data and has relatively large uncertainties but they agree with existing models and estimates based on proxies.
