Background: There may be a close relationship between neonatal neonates and / or neonatal phototherapy and childhood asthma. This study aimed to assess the relationship between neonatal jaundice and / or phototherapy and the possibility of childhood asthma among the Iranian population. Methods: A case-control study is currently conducted on 102 consecutive asthmatic children admitted to hospitals in Chilren Medical Center, Tehran, Iran, 2015-2016. Asthma is diagnosed by pediatric asthma and an allergist based on clinical manifestations and / or spirometry findings for children over 5 years old. A total of 113 sexes and children of the same age without asthma who were admitted to another ward during the same time period were selected as the control group. Data collected by the researchers' checklist included data on age, sex, gestational age, history of neonatal jaundice and the history and duration of phototherapy, which was filled in by the parents / guardians of the participants. Results: There were significant differences between cases and controls with respect to preterm birth, phototherapy history and duration of phototherapy. The history of jaundice is not associated with asthma in childhood. In the multivariable logistic regression model, both phototherapy history (P = 0.029) and duration of phototherapy (P = 0.03) were considered as determinants for the occurrence of asthma in childhood. Conclusion: Based on our results, the relationship between history and duration of phototherapy and asthma in children is strongly recommended. Both groups did not differ significantly with regard to history of jaundice, even after adjustment for preterm birth history
