Background : Execution of movements in healthy individuals increases the somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold. This change is the result of sensory mechanisms at the subcortical level. Although the threshold of somatosensory temporal discrimination increases abnormally in patients with focal dystonia, the effect of implementing motion on temporal somatosensory discrimination in dystonic patients is unknown.

Purpose : The aim of this study was to determine whether modulation of the somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold caused by voluntary movements was normal in various forms of focal dystonia.

Methods : We enrolled 71 dystonic patients (24 with blefarospasm, 31 with cervical dystonia, and 16 with focal hand dystonia) and 39 healthy participants suitable for age. The paired stimulus for the somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold is triggered by execution movements at the beginning of the movement and at various time intervals thereafter. We analyzed kinematic features of motor duty to ascertain whether tactile inputs induce changes in the parameters of the movement.

Results: Movement execution causes a longer and longer increase in the somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold, both after movement onset and at various time intervals thereafter, in patients with cervical dystonia and focal hand dystonia than in those with blepharospasm or healthy participants. While somatosensory discrimination testing does not induce changes in the speed of the average movement of the index finger in patients or healthy participants.

Conclusion [19459]: Changes in the somatosensory temporality threshold caused by abnormal execution movements in focal dystonia. This disorder is related to the type of dystonia. Abnormal disturbances of sensory information may be involved in triggering that is induced by movement or worsening of various forms of focal dystonia.
