Making initial geometries and configuring the temperature of 3D numerical simulations is a challenging task. Professional tools are expensive. They often have steep learning curves and most do not interact with numerical simulation software used by the geodynamic and tectonic academic community. There, we developed geomIO (Input / Output geometry), the MATLAB tool box to make an initial configuration of the geological model regarding geometry models and temperature structures. geomIO allows users to create 3D volumes of geographic references by drawing multiple 2D cross sections in a standard vector graphics editor. This volume is then used to determine material properties and set the initial temperature distribution in a set of vertices. In 2D mode, polygons can also be used to create a triangle mesh. In addition to standard functionality, the gravity anomalies of each geometry made with geomio can be calculated.
In this paper, we provide an overview of the basic functions of geomIO. We describe the power of our software with sophisticated tectonic and geodynamic applications that cannot be done with free software currently available. Applications include Himalayan orogens, Japanese subduction zones, current salt-lined zones, and small-scale tectonic structures. We explain the algorithm and file format in supporting information.
This toolbox is user-friendly and flexible. Users can use special pipelines or predefined data processing pipelines, so most applications only require a few lines of code. geomIO is distributed under the GNU General Public License and includes an online wiki with additional tutorials and examples.
