After being marginalized for a long time in their own country, in the post-reform era the Malays began to rise to show their existence in the Riau region. The path taken to show this existence is done by reconstructing identity. How the efforts of the Malays to reconstruct their identities and address interethnic communication in showing their existence are the focus of this research. The location of this study was in Pekanbaru Riau and in the analysis of the event was confirmed by identity theory, social action theory and social reality construction theory. The research method uses ethnography with the main data collection techniques are interviews and observations. The results of the study found that redefining ethnic identity was a step taken to get better bargaining power for Riau Malays. This effort is a strategy of the Riau Malays to improve the positive image of their ethnic identity and gain a more strategic social position when dealing with immigrants. To achieve a better social position, the Malays reconstructed their identity by attaching Malay to Islam as a unit and claiming the Malays as children of the country. Reconstruction of Malay identity after reform eventually ended in efforts to reposition the better socio-political position of Malays among the people of Riau. The reconstruction eventually became a source of meaning and vision for Riau Malays to unite to claim their rights and achieve glorious Malay ideals in the lives of religious communities.
