This study is a classroom action research ( Classroom Action Research ) which is carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consists of four stages, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of the study were students of class VIII.I SMP Negeri 3 Karanganyar year 2012/2013 lessons. Research data obtained through observation and test. Data analysis technique is with descriptive analysis technique. Validate data from student participation and learning process using source triangulation technique. The results concluded the use of problem-solving methods with the reciprocal teaching approach can improve mathematical communication skills and student participation. In the first cycle, the average percentage of mathematical communication ability achieved by students is 57.03% and in cycle II the average percentage of students' mathematical communication ability increased by 11.53% to 68.56%. In cycle I obtained the average percentage of student participation reached 68.75% and on the second cycle average percentage of student participation increased by 18.75% to 87.50%. Based on these results it can be concluded that the application of problem-solving methods with the reciprocal teaching approach can improve the mathematical communication and participation of VIII.I students of SMP Negeri 3 Karanganyar in 2012/2013
