East Asian currency crisis in 1997-98 has generated interest big on the relationship between the foreign exchange market in the Asian region. Implicit in the literature is the assumption that the currency crisis can be attributed to the tight integration of goods and the capital markets of Asian economies both with each other and with developed market economies in recent years. In this paper, we find evidence of a strong link between parallel exchange rates from five East Asian countries: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand in the 1970s and early 1980s, the period when it was generally believed that there might not have been being strong in the relationship between this economy in terms of international trade or finance as we observed in the 1990s. Thus, the relationship between market exchange rates in the Asian region is not a new phenomenon and may not have to be linked to the liberalization of capital markets and commodities carried out by the Asian economy in recent years.
