The savings rate among South Africans is too low, and increasing the savings rate is very important for the financial welfare of citizens and for the country. Many South Africans do not use formal savings products, including unit trust. However, there is a need to increase the use of trust units and thus savings rates, and ultimately consumer financial welfare. Unit trusts are well-designed saving / investment vehicles, allowing for a small investment amount with an affordable cost structure catering to consumers with different risk profiles. Therefore, this study will focus on investigating consumer perceptions of unit trust by identifying factors influencing consumer intention to use unit trust as an investment vehicle. A quantitative study was used and for empirical investigation convenience samples from 509 respondents completed a self-administered structured questionnaire. Data are analyzed quantitatively and the main results show that Accessibility and Benefit from unit trust is the most important factor affecting consumer intention to use trust unit. The strategies described in this study can help financial service providers in encouraging consumers to use trust units as investment vehicles. This can increase the level of state savings and ultimately improve the financial welfare of South Africa.
